Harley-Davidson profit roars 44 per cent higher on rising US demand for its motorcycles


NEW YORK, N.Y. - Harley-Davidson Inc. said Wednesday that its first-quarter profit jumped 44 per cent, as improving economic conditions boosted U.S. sales of its famous motorcycles.

The results beat Wall Street expectations and the company boosted its forecast for shipments for the year.

Harley shares climbed $2.40, or 4.8 per cent, to $52.76 in late morning trading, after peaking at $53.03 earlier in the day. That easily topped the Milwaukee-based company's previous 52-week high of $52.03 and marked its highest share price since September 2007.

Keith Wandell, Harley's chairman, president and chief executive, attributed the results to an improved U.S. economic environment and the company's ongoing restructuring program, along with the enduring appeal of the company's products.In the year 2006, the company launched all new Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob.

Both the machines are being equipped with air cooled, twin cam 96 powertrain that generates a top power of J1349 and develops a peak torque of 124.73 Nm at 3,000 rpm.

 The torque figures are awesome on low rpm. The bike is having 6 speed manual gearbox. The fuel injection system of the Harley Davidson Dyna is Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Harley, as part of its first-quarter earnings statement, said it expects to ship 245,000 to 250,000 motorcycles this year, up from a January forecast of as many as 245,000, based on demand from its “outreach” customers, which include people under the age of 34, as well as women, Hispanics and blacks. Harley rose 4.9 percent to $52.83 at 11:29 a.m. New York time, after reaching $53.03, the biggest intraday jump since Nov. 30.
Bikes such as the $7,999 Super Low and the Forty-Eight, starting at $10,499, are winning new riders. Such customers made up more than one-third of U.S. sales in the quarter, the Milwaukee-based company said today, as marketing efforts bore fruit.
“There were barriers that were keeping our outreach groups from going to the dealership and riding a bike,” Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell said in an interview. “We understand what those barriers are and we’re breaking them down.”
First-quarter net income was $172 million, or 74 cents a share, compared with $119.3 million, or 51 cents, a year earlier, Harley said today in the statement.
The handlebars are in steel. This Harley Davidson Dyna variant has medallion type fuel tank, for 2010 models, new Michein Scorcher tyres, classic boober solo seat and rear shocks. This bike comes in four hues- vivid black, black denim, black ice denim and red hot sunglo.

Wheels are in black laced stainless-steel. The higher end variant of Harley Davidson Dyna, Harley Davidson FXDC Super Glide, has custom tank with company name graphic. The handlebars of this Harley Davidson Dyna has different style and design altogether.

Harley Davidson has introduced 12 bikes in India with distinctive features and style. Among them, Harley Davidson Dyna is the most stylish and comfortable motorcycle. In India the bike model is launched in two variants. The first one is Harley Davidson Dyna FXDB Street Bob and the second one is Harley Davidson FXDC Super Glide.
