BMW didn’t need to update the S1000RR. It was already the most powerful production motorcycle available, and one of the bestselling, too: 24 percent of all sportbikes sold worldwide in 2010 were S1000RRs. But just two years after its debut, the model has been given a significant revision. The awesome, 193-horsepower engine is unchanged, though electronic reprogramming makes power delivery punchier at low and mid rpm, while numerous chassis changes driven by two seasons of racing make the bike more agile and responsive. These changes are subtle—evolution, not revolution—but significant in number, and address all our criticisms of the first-generation machine.
The S1000RR still offers four drive modes—a reduced-power Rain mode (now increased from 152 to 163 bhp), plus full-power Sport, Race and Slick modes. The throttle-response curve has been recalibrated for more immediacy in all three full-power modes, and the power curve has been boosted for stronger acceleration in Race and Slick. A lighter throttle spring and new, quick-turn twistgrip make engine response feel more direct, while a larger air intake and longer velocity stacks, along with a redesigned exhaust, produce a slight torque increase between 5000 and 7500 rpm.

It always strikes me how small the V7s are, which is a good thing because they handle so well. And while all of the V7s catch the eye, the V7 Racer especially stands out. The finish is extraordinary, and its chromed fuel tank is now metal (instead of nylon) like the other 2012 V7s
They now hold 5.8 gallons—a full 1.3 gallons more than the 2008 V7 Classic with a plastic tank. Guzzi claims a 300-mile range. The metallic fuel tanks will make life easier for a lot of prospective V7 owners, as it allows the choice to use a magnetic tank bag when touring. Moto Guzzi also claims new dry weight figures 11 lbs lighter than before, landing all three V7s at 395 lbs.
The air-cooled transverse 90-degree V-Twin is the real gem and, despite being very compact, sounds like a liter-class Twin. The 2012 version of the classic 744cc V-Twin is heavily improved, so much so it could almost be called new. New cylinder heads, lightweight pistons, new cylinders, new intake manifolds, new gearshift selectors, new airbox and even new spark plugs! Benefits are much better low-rpm torque response and a smoother top end.
The changes have led to a boost in power from 48.8 hp at 6800 rpm to 50.0 hp at 6200 rpm, and a boost in torque from 40.3 ft.-lb. at 3600 rpm to 44.3 ft.-lb. at a low 2800 rpm. These new figures are only impressive when you also look at the lowered rpm range that the engine now achieves these figures. It makes for a much more responsive engine from the word go. Compression has been increased by a point (now 10.6:1) due to new engine parts and the combustion is more efficient. This leads to a 12% lower emissions value according to Moto Guzzi.
Around Lake Como the V7s ride with great ease, which is to be expected as these are the very roads Moto Guzzi use as their testing grounds. The steering is slightly slower on the Racer than the V7 Special and V7 Stone, but that’s to give more cornering stability at higher speeds
My 6-foot frame is actually slightly too tall for all the V7s, but as they are nimble motorcycles, it didn’t bother me. The improved suspension feels plush and is a very good compromise between sport and comfort. The V7 Racer doesn’t fail in either departments, but naturally it’s not as comfortable as its siblings, the V7 Special and V7 Stone.
Keep the V7 Racer between 2500-3000 rpm and it’s smooth as butter. Bring the revs over 3K rpm and there are some vibrations to go along with its smooth acceleration. Still, the 44.3 ft.-lb., rather than outright horsepower, that really motivates this Guzzi.
The V7 Special and V7 Stone have almost identical riding positions which are upright and fairly comfortable. They steer with more ease than the V7 Racer which is due to the more conventional handlebar. The differences between the bad-boy V7 Stone and the V7 Special are mainly in the styling department.
Whilst the V7 Special sports spoked wheels on aluminium rims, the V7 Stone has more modern-looking cast-aluminium wheels. Our V7 Special test bikes were fitted with aftermarket saddlebags which also fit the Stone, making both bikes equally practical. Shaft-drive is standard on all three models, adding to their practicality.
The gearbox selector is also new to provide for smoother upshifts. It works, as I didn’t experience any trouble hitting false neutrals or such gremlins. The suspension has been upgraded on all models to provide a more comfortable ride, and the V7 Racer has new twin rear shocks. All the V7 range features the Pirelli Speed Demon tires in a 100/90-18 front and a 130/80-17 rear.
When riding the V7 Special with a pillion, we adjusted the rear suspension for a harder set-up. She reported decent padding in the seat but not enough leg room. Also, due to the pannier mount she couldn’t hold on to the grab rails where she would have liked to. The little 744cc Twin struggles with a pillion aboard, requiring a lot more revs to keep up with the group. The V7s are great solo bikes but slightly under powered for lots of pillion riding.
It’s around $2200 more than the V7 Special and V7 Stone, so definitely the premium V7 for the enthusiast and the collectors
Mercedes-Benz announced it will bring the electric Smart eScooter to market in 2014.
The concept model of the Smart eScooter was originally unveiled at the 2010 Paris Auto Show along with an electric bicycle (the Smart eBike) to showcase the Smart ForTwo electric car. Both the car and the eBike are launching this year, but they will be joined by the eScooter in 2014. “The decision in favor of the escooter has been made,” says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, executive vice-president of sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future.”

Slash 2/3 of the horsepower and mate it with cheaper but effective
components, and riders more often than not are presented with a
competent and fun mount to get along with on the street. One such ride
is the new 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650.
The V-Strom models have generated cult followings since their debuts,
with the Wee-Strom carving out a niche as a versatile middleweight. This
year’s V-Strom 650 represents a welcome infusion of new blood in the
Suzuki lineup (the larger V-Strom also returns to the U.S. lineup after a
two-year absence)
Get behind the controls and the 32.9-inch seat still delivers an easy
reach to the ground with its slim contours. This is despite the raised
seat height of 15mm (owing to suspension adjustments). A high and low
seat option are also available, which further raise or lower seat height
20mm. We prefer the high seat option, which provides as skosh more room
to the pegs. Reach to the bars feels natural, and while the 650 isn’t a
tiny bike, it remains a good match for the smaller statured. At 6’1”
our legs splayed out from the tank, but we felt comfortable nonetheless
rolling out of Charlotte headed up to the mountains.
While spec sheet may look almost identical to the 2011 model, the
Wee-Strom engine is new as well. Instead of using the SV650 Twin, this
bike sources the Gladius engine. The 645cc V-Twin maintains the same
81mm bore and 62.6mm stroke, but features new pistons, cylinders, valve
springs and cams. This gives the new Wee-Strom more torque down low,
with Suzuki touting particular improvement between 4000 and 6000 rpm.
The new engine also promises some extra oomph up top. As a rule Suzuki
doesn’t claim power numbers, but the last time we tested the Gladius it
turned our dyno up to 67.12 rear wheel horsepower and 42.9 lb-ft of
torque.
Fueling is smooth with a completely forgiving throttle. The ham-fisted
rider need not fear, making the V-Strom ideal for beginner or
intermediate riders. The same can be said of the six-speed transmission.
The low first gear allows for creeping starts and easy launches. Sixth
gear overdrive hums along at 70 mph with the tach holding steady at five
grand. Clutch engagement is seamless, Suzuki having changed clutch
release mechanism in the new model. We occasionally had to stomp when
shifting from neutral to first gear, but once in motion the gearbox is
well sorted and shuffles up and down without trouble. We also praise the
prominent gear position indicator on the instrument panel – another
personal favorite on bike interfaces.
After two days and 400-plus miles, we observed a steady 45-50 mpg
efficiency from our test bike. Even considering the half-gallon smaller
fuel load in the 2012 model, its 5.3-gallon tank still equates into well
over 200 miles of range. That is a welcome trait for a bike with
touring pretensions.

Brammo, an innovative electric motorcycle manufacturer, revealed not one, but two new electric powered production motorcycles at the media launch in Hollywood, California. Brammo introduced its new Empulse and Empulse R, which showcase a host of new technology from the Ashland, Oregon-based firm.
Pumping out a whopping 54 ponies the Empulse is the first production electric motorcycle to receive a water cooling system. The power is provided by Brammo’s own Brammo Power Lithium-Ion Battery with a life of 1500 cycles to 80% capacity and two different levels of charging. Level 1 fully recharges the battery at a maximum of eight hours while Level 2 maximum charging time is less than half that at 3.5 hours. Every ten minutes of charge adds up to five miles of riding range.
The 440-pound bikes are virtually identical, with the R model spruced up with sleek carbon fiber body components to compliment it’s already innovative technology. The two machines feature the styling aspects of a modern day sport bike…minus the exhaust. The bikes also feature all-new Integrated Electric Transmission (IET). The IET is a mechatronic propulsion unit that was specifically designed to work with the Empulse’s electric motor, clutch, and gear shift…yes, a six-speed gear shift transmission. Brammo’s reasoning for the gear shifting was to bring the electric-powered bike closer to the feeling of a traditional internal combustion engine. Brammo claims it even has the characteristics of engine braking when down-shifting. When fully charged the performance levels offer enough to get the new bike over 100 mph. Claimed ranges include 121 miles through the city, 56 miles on the highway, and 77 miles combined. Two operating modes are provided through a switch on the handlebar. Normal mode limits power by reducing max current delivered to the motor. Sport mode provides maximum performance to both acceleration and top speed. Under deceleration, energy is returned to the battery to extend the riding range.
The suspension components are a fully-adjustable 43mm Marzocchi fork and Sachs Shock. Braking on the Empulse consists of dual 310mm Brembo discs with matching four-piston radial-mount hydraulic calipers. The rear brake is a Brembo single disc with a dual-piston Brembo Brake Caliper. All of this sits on 17-inch Marchesini wheels mounted up with Avon rubber.
This futuristic technology does not come at a small price. As mentioned, the base Empulse model has a price tag of $16,995 with the R model tagged at $18,995. Brammo offers a two-year limited factory warranty, one-year fender-to-fender limited warranty, and a two-year limited powertrain warranty (batteries and motor). Color options include True Blood Red, Eclipsed Black, and White Noise. Unfortunately the base model will not be available until 2013 but the Empulse R will be ready for purchase in June of this year
